From “mild hybrids” to “super hybrids” — A guide to today’s EV landscape

Between 2021 and 2024, many automakers accelerated their all-electric strategy. But as shifting market dynamics and energy prices influence consumer preferences, automakers are balancing their electric line-ups with a growing array of hybrid choices — ranging from so-called “mild hybrids” to “super hybrids.”

Today’s electric vehicles (EVs) present an alphabet soup of drivetrain options: MHEV, PHEV, and BEV. Navigating these choices requires an understanding of how the different technologies work, how they are maintained, and how they might impact your budget.

Demystifying the acronyms

To assess your needs, start by understanding how the different systems operate:

  • MHEV (Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle): A “mild hybrid” uses a small electric motor and a compact battery pack to assist a traditional gasoline engine. When a MHEV cannot drive on electricity alone — the gas engine is always running to move the wheels — the electric components handle tasks like powering electronics when the car is stopped or capturing energy during braking.
  • PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle): A plug-in hybrid acts as a bridge between gas and pure electricity. It contains both a traditional gas engine and a larger electric battery that you charge by plugging into an outlet. According to data from FuelEconomy.gov, modern PHEVs can typically drive purely on electricity for short distances — typically 20 to 50 miles. Once that electric range is depleted, the vehicle seamlessly switches to operating like a traditional hybrid gas vehicle.
  • BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle): A BEV runs entirely on electricity powered by a large onboard battery pack and one or more electric motors. Because it lacks an internal combustion engine, it does not use gasoline or produce tailpipe emissions. The rise of the “super hybrid”

Emerging as a distinct variation within the PHEV category are vehicles often referred to in the industry as “super hybrids” or Extended-Range Electric Vehicles (EREVs).

Traditional PHEVs are typically designed as gas vehicles with an electric boost. These newer extended-range configurations flip that equation, prioritizing electric power for daily driving. Here is how they differ from standard hybrids:

  • Electric-first engineering: In these vehicles, the electric motor acts as the primary source of propulsion for everyday driving. The onboard gasoline engine primarily functions as a generator to feed electricity back into the battery rather than directly turning the wheels.
  • Daily commuter ranges: While traditional PHEVs offer limited electric ranges, super hybrids carry much larger batteries. Many models entering the market can cover the 30-mile average daily commute for Americans.
  • Extended total range: Because the gasoline engine efficiently maintains the battery’s charge while on the move, these models can offer a significantly longer combined driving range than traditional plug-in options. According to a recent S&P report, a super hybrid can achieve a total driving range of 600-1,000 miles on a single tank of gas and a full charge.
  • DC fast charging: Unlike standard PHEVs, which usually require slow overnight charging, most super hybrids feature DC fast-charging capabilities, allowing you to top off the battery quickly at public stations just like a full EV.

Maintenance realities

Each type of vehicle has different maintenance considerations, summarized in this chart:

While fully electric BEVs don’t require oil changes, spark plugs, or timing belts, they also experience a faster rate of tire degradation due to the heavy battery. In summary: Every consumer’s needs are different. The right choice comes down to your driving habits, geography, and preferences. Big picture considerations include:

  • A mild hybrid if you want maximum simplicity and a lower upfront price tag while still squeezing extra fuel efficiency out of your daily drive
  • A plug-in hybridopens in same window or super hybrid if you want the daily cost-savings of an electric vehicle for your commute, but still need the flexibility to take a long road trip without worrying about public charging station availability
  • A fully electric car if you are ready to eliminate gasoline entirely, have reliable access to home or workplace charging, and want to maximize long-term savings on engine maintenance
